In the 1800s, Port Townsend was a thriving seaport and was nicknamed "The City of Dreams" because of the potential that many visualized for the area. However, these dreams faded when the Northern Pacific Railroad failed to connect the city to the eastern Puget Sound city of Tacoma. By the late 1890's the boom was over.
There are
many structures to remind us of the Victorian beginnings of Port Townsend.
There's much to enjoy about Port Townsend and the surrounding area - great restaurants, festivals, and the arts to mention a few. Because Port Townsend is located at the tip of the Quimper Peninsula and is surrounded by Puget Sound, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and Discovery Bay, activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking, sailing, and beachcombing are popular.
